In this post you will learn:
ONE of the ways you can help build organic traffic and improve your page ranking is by using internal linking. Here we give you four steps to improve your internal linking.
Internal links are a task you can carry out yourself if you wish and they are a way to help build your rankings because you are helping search engines because pages are linked and it helps the search engines get a clearer understanding of your website structure and your content.
What Is Internal Linking
When it comes to web pages you have two types of links, external and internal.
An external link is when another page or domain points a link towards your website. These other domains have to have authority in your niche but are really helpful towards building your page rankings by leveraging the other site’s authority. These types of links can help funnel potential clients or customers into your domain.
Internal links are links within your website to pages with similar content or content that will be relevant to what you are talking about in a blog post or on a company’s service page.
Internal links best practices
The more links on your site, the greater the chances of ranking higher.
Like all things in the business world, it pays to set out a strategy before you begin to work on anything.
It’s easier to work to a plan rather than just hoping things go right.
You should begin with an aim of trying to target a key term or phrase in any articles or pages you are trying to link internally. Here are the four key elements of our internal linking strategy.
#1 Research your keyword term
You need to research and determine your keyword topic that you’d like to start ranking on.
If you want more information on keyword research check out this blog post (See that is how to use internal links)
As with any keyword research, make sure there is good traffic volume.
#2 Identify link opportunities
Once you’ve got your keyword or longtail keyword researched, you need to pick which page or pages you are going to target on your domain to direct people looking at your website to other compatible content. Remember the longer you keep searchers on your website, the happier you make Google and the more likely you are to sell.
# 3: Analyse and organise
Now it’s time to analyse your opportunities within the website to create internal links. This can be done simply by recording all the keywords from various service pages or blogs.
Then copy the URL and anchor text and add them to a second page on the same spreadsheet so it will just be a matter of copying and pasting the links later on.
Add the links
You can start to add links now to the various pages where there is a correlation between the subject matter. For instance on SEO Agency Cork we could link keywords in this blog post to blog posts on backlinking, keyword research, and general SEO articles.
Too much of a good thing
Make sure not to add more than 100 links per page although very few articles will even come near that number.
Also, it is best practice to add just one link per key term back to the page you have targeted otherwise Google may see your efforts as being spammy.
It’s also a good idea to update older links (see our blog on content pruning).
