How long does SEO take? An honest answer for Irish businesses

Anyone who promises page one in two weeks is selling something. Here is what a realistic timeline looks like, month by month.

It is the first question every client asks, and the honest answer is it depends. That is not a dodge. Here is what it depends on, and what you should realistically see along the way.

The short answer

Most Irish businesses see early movement within one to three months, meaningful results between three and six months, and the compounding benefits of SEO from six to twelve months onwards. Local SEO for a business with a good Google profile and little competition can move much faster. A new website in a crowded national market can take a year or more.

What it depends on

  • Competition: ranking for solicitor Cork is a different task from ranking for agricultural solicitor Mallow.
  • Your starting point: an established site with some authority moves faster than a brand-new domain.
  • Technical health: if Google struggles to crawl or index your site, nothing else works until that is fixed.
  • How much you do: consistent monthly work beats a burst of activity followed by nothing.
  • Local versus national: local map pack rankings often respond faster than national organic rankings.

Month one: foundations

The first month is mostly diagnosis and fixing. Audit, research, technical repairs, Google Business Profile clean-up and tracking set-up. You may see quick wins, such as a profile category change lifting map visibility, but rankings usually have not moved much yet. That is normal.

Months two and three: early movement

Pages that were stuck on page two start creeping up. New or improved pages get indexed and begin ranking for longer, specific searches. Profile actions and calls often start to rise if local work was part of the plan. This is where you should see evidence that the direction is right.

Months four to six: results you can feel

For most local businesses this is when enquiries noticeably increase. Main service pages reach page one for important searches, the map pack becomes more consistent and the review rhythm is established. Content published in the first few months starts to pull its weight.

After six months: compounding

SEO is unusual in marketing because the results build on each other. Each page that ranks, each link earned and each review collected keeps working. This is when the cost per enquiry from search usually becomes the best of any channel.

Warning signs that something is wrong

  • Nothing has changed at all after three months, and nobody can explain why.
  • Your reports show rankings for phrases nobody searches.
  • You do not know what was actually done each month.
  • Someone guaranteed you the number one position. Nobody can honestly guarantee that.

How to speed things up

Fix technical issues first, focus on a small set of high-value pages rather than lots of thin content, get your Google profile right early and build a review habit from week one. And measure the right things: calls and enquiries, not just rankings.
